Moscow was named host during the FIB Congress in Kemerovo, Russia the year before. Västerås in Sweden challenged in the fight to be organizer 2008. Group A was played in the Olympic Arena. The arena was built for the 1980 Olympic Summer games and hosted basket ball and boxing. Group B was meant to be held at the Krylatskoye Sport Complex, but after the roof in November 2007 gave way to the snow that fell over Moscow, the arena could not be used.
