Varkaus is a city in the province of Northern Savo in Finland. Varkaus has approximately 21,155 inhabitants. Varkaus is monolingual Finnish. However, the city is a so-called language island and in the city since 1919 the Swedish school in Varkaus, originally because formerly supervisory staff at Varkaus’s mill was largely recruited from Sweden and the Swedish-speaking Ostrobothnia.
